The Day We Will Remember
I ask the audience to take something away from the stories they will hear today and use them in their lives
in some way. I tell them if they will do that then we can achieve our goal of “Make A Difference In A
Child’s Life.” I will use the analogy that life is “Russian Roulette”, are you going to put bullets in the gun
or take them out thru out the presentation. We all have choices of what we do with the bullets and each
decision we make can make our day a little safer or a little less safe. And sometimes the bullets you put in
the gun may affect someone else is one of the stories lessons. I almost died in a workplace accident 26
years ago and tell the story of how that would have affected my family. I will also tell four more stories
from the perspective of friend, father, husband, nephew, brother, supervisor, and department manager of
the things that have affected my circle. Some good and some not so good. But in each story is a message
with a lesson in it for each of us. With five stories in my presentation, they give it a good chance of
making an impact on each and every person in the audience. We never know which story is going to
impact which person in the audience. I close by asking for the audience to remember their facility’s last
recordable accident, lost time accident and if they have ever been working for a facility that had a fatality.
They will raise their hands to these questions, and I ask them to remember the details of the last question
for a few seconds. I then ask them how much product they produced, what time they finished a job or can
they remember something of importance in their lives from a week ago today. No one will raise their
hands. I then change the screen to a picture of the three buddies of mine in the stories sitting under a
banner that reads, “We Will Never Remember How Many Tons We Make Today. What We Will
Remember Is The Day That Someone Gets Seriously Injured… That Will Be The Day We Will
Remember For The Rest Of Our Lives.” I close with a picture of my family on the screen pointing at it
and ask the audience to ask themselves, when they are making the decisions of what to do with the bullets
in the game of Russian Roulette of life, what do they want you to do with the bullets? Please go out these
doors and use something in the stories you have listened to today and if you do, it will “Make A
Difference In A Child’s Life.”
The takeaways are:
1. Learn from others.
2. Use your influence.
3. Don’t let ego/pride get in the way. Let others influence you.
4. It’s not about you.
5. Brother’s keeper takes two.
6. Just do your job.
7. We will never remember how much product, what time we finished a job or how quickly we answered
that text. But if something goes wrong…
I will bring these up on the screen one at a time and give a sentence or two about the story each came
from.
